The non-academic version of me.
Outside of image pipelines and papers, here's the rest of me. I was born in San Sebastián, in the Basque Country, on the north coast of Spain — home of pintxos, rain, and (allegedly) the best food per capita in the world. I take full credit for none of it, but I'll happily take you on a tour of my favourite pintxo bars if you ever visit.
Sport has been a constant throughout my life. I played waterpolo for 21 years, since I was 11, starting out as a kid at a small club called Tximistarri. From there I moved on to Fortuna K.E., and eventually ended up at Waterpolo Donosti — which, in one of those small-world twists, turned out to be a spin-off of Tximistarri itself. We were once the same club, split apart, and years later merged back together, so I came full circle without ever really planning it.
These days I've mostly traded the pool for triathlon — running, swimming, and cycling, in whatever order my knees allow that week. I log (most of) it on Strava, if you want to see the evidence, or just judge my pace.
When I’m not staring at a segmentation mask, I read — mostly sci-fi and fantasy. Brandon Sanderson takes up a disturbing amount of shelf space in my house: Mistborn, the Stormlight Archive… Bridge Four forever. Having a daughter hasn’t left me with much reading time lately, but I make it work. Shameless plug: my identical twin brother wrote a novel, El último tirador del KGB — go read it. And yes, we really do look exactly the same.
Tabletop nerd at heart: D&D campaigns and Magic: The Gathering nights with friends are a regular thing. In another life I put an unreasonable number of hours into World of Warcraft, and my friends and I still retell the same raid stories from back then like they happened yesterday.
I’m a very social person — being around friends and playing pretty much anything, from board games to sports, is one of my favourite hobbies. And, of course, I’m hopelessly in love with my partner, our daughter, and our two cats, who firmly believe they run the household.
Big anime fan, and I love watching films in general. I’m also (very slowly) learning Japanese on Duolingo — my streak is currently stronger than my vocabulary.
